Narrative of the Project

The National Assembly,  together  with the  Foreign  Office  and the Presidential   Estate  forms  the  core  of  the  Capital  Complex   in Islamabad.   Situated ideally on the crossing of National Avenue and Capital Avenue, these buildings shall be used as a home for all major political, administrative and diplomatic activities in tomorrow’s Pakistan.

Naqvi and Siddiquie  has  been  associated  with   Edward   Durell Stone  &  Associates  of  New York  in  the  design  of  the  National Assembly  and the  Foreign  Office  Buildings.

Fullest advantage has been taken of the multi-level site in the location of these buildings. The Presidential Estate is on the highest level and overlooking the other two buildings facing each other.

The National Assembly Building has a total floor area of 172800 sq. ft. distributed in five floors.  The two lower  floors  are allocated for car parking while  the third floor houses the Assembly Chamber  in  the  centre  with  its  attached  offices surrounding it.

Parliamentary Offices and other related office accommodation is provided on the two top floors.  The building is centrally airconditioned.

The diminishing size of the upper floors allows terrace plantations all round, giving the whole building a look of dignity and grandeur. The Assembly Chamber accommodates 324 members for a parliamentary session and 416 delegates for an international conference. With  a span of 144’0″  on each  side  this  shall  be one of the  largest halls  in  South-East Asia.   Estimated cost of project: Rs.  45.0 Million.

THE FOREIGN OFFICE:

It is situated opposite the National Assembly Building, and is identical to it in form and area with the exception of the Assembly Chamber.   Its place is taken by a large courtyard dotted with evergreen plants.

The car parking is taken on the lowest floor while the four upper floors which are centrally airconditioned, accommodate offices of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Estimated cost of project:  Rs.  35.0 Million.
